\n\tGood news, everyone. Donald Trump says the Iran war will be over by the end of the week. \u201cTwo or three days,\u201d he told reporters Monday night, adding that there are no \u201csticking points,\u201d and that \u201cwe\u2019re very close to having a very, very good, strong, powerful deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe United States and Iran may indeed reach a peace deal in the near future, but there is ample reason to be skeptical \u2014 if not to totally dismiss \u2014 the president\u2019s stated optimism.<\/p>\n

\n\tOne pretty good reason to be skeptical is that the day after Trump said a peace deal was \u201ctwo or three days away,\u201d he announced that Iran had shot down an American helicopter and that the U.S. military would respond in kind \u2014 which it did later on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt isn\u2019t the first time Trump has insisted a deal to end the war is imminent, only for that to very\u00a0much not be the case. He has been claiming the conflict would be brief since the U.S. and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran in February. Meanwhile, the war has wrought havoc on the global economy, with Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz and choking the oil that moves through it, and the president\u2019s approval numbers have cratered amid the resulting cost-of-living crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump clearly wants to move on from the war, but he doesn\u2019t seem to be willing or able to do the hard work to actually make it happen. He has instead made pathetic pleas on social media \u2014 \u201cIsrael and Iran must immediately stop \u2018shooting,\u2019\u201d he wrote this week \u2014 while claiming a deal is just around the corner.<\/p>\n

\n\tHere\u2019s a brief, incomplete history of Trump stringing the American people along, starting almost immediately after the conflict broke out on Febr. 28:<\/p>\n

\nMarch 1: <\/strong>\u201cFour to five weeks,\u201d Trump tells The New York Times <\/em>the day after launching the offensive. It \u201cwon\u2019t be difficult.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMarch 5: <\/strong>\u201cThe United States military, together with the wonderful Israeli partners, continues to totally demolish the enemy far ahead of schedule and at levels that people have never seen before,\u201d Trump says in remarks congratulating Inter Miami for winning the Major League Soccer title.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMarch 9: <\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be finished pretty quickly,\u201d Trump claims in an address in Florida. \u201cI think the war is very complete, pretty much,\u201d he tells ABC News later the same day.<\/p>\n

\nMarch 11: <\/strong>\u201cLet me tell you, we\u2019ve won. You know, you never like to say too early you won. We won. In the first hour, it was over,\u201d Trump says at an event in Kentucky. The same day in Ohio, he tells a reporter that the ongoing hostilities were \u201can excursion that will keep us out of a war.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMarch 13: <\/strong>Trump says the war in Iran will end \u201cwhen I feel it, feel it in my bones\u201d in a Fox News radio interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMarch 15:<\/strong> On Air Force One, Trump tells reporters that Iran is \u201cdecimated,\u201d but that he wasn\u2019t \u201cdeclaring it over.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMarch 19: <\/strong>Trump is asked why the Pentagon wants Congress to authorize $200 billion more for the war. \u201cThis is a very volatile world,\u201d Trump says. \u201cYou could end this thing in two seconds if you wanted to.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMarch 20:<\/strong> Trump lashes out at Pope Leo, telling reporters at the White House that he doesn\u2019t want to \u201cdo a ceasefire\u201d and that \u201cyou don\u2019t do a ceasefire when you\u2019re literally obliterating the other side.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMarch 21: <\/strong>Trump threatens Iran, writing on Truth Social: \u201cIf Iran doesn\u2019t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMarch 23:<\/strong> Two days later, Trump claims that his administration and Iran have had \u201cVERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI HAVE INSTRUCTED THE DEPARTMENT OF WAR TO POSTPONE ANY AND ALL MILITARY STRIKES AGAINST IRANIAN POWER PLANTS AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A FIVE DAY PERIOD,\u201d he adds in his Truth Social post.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMarch 24: <\/strong>\u201cThis war has been won,\u201d Trump declares at the swearing-in ceremony of DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. \u201cThe only one that likes to keep it going is the fake news.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMarch 29:<\/strong> \u201cI do see a deal, in Iran, yeah,\u201d Trump says aboard Air Force One. \u201cCould be soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMarch 30: <\/strong>Trump writes on Truth Social that he is in \u201cserious discussions\u201d with Iran, and making progress. \u201cBut, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately \u2018Open for Business,\u2019 we will conclude our lovely \u2018stay\u2019 in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet \u2018touched.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\nApril 1:<\/strong> \u201cWe are going to finish the job, and we\u2019re going to finish it very fast, we\u2019re getting very close,\u201d Trump says in his first national address since the beginning of the war.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nApril 4:<\/strong> After Iran shoots down a U.S. fighter jet, Trump writes on Truth Social that \u201cHell will reign down,\u201d on Iran if they don\u2019t make a deal to end the war within the next 48 hours. We are now beyond the four- to five-week timeline Trump initially set.<\/p>\n

\nApril 5: <\/strong>\u201cOpen the Fuckin\u2019 Strait, you crazy bastards, or you\u2019ll be living in Hell \u2013 JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah,\u201d Trump writes on Easter Sunday on Truth Social.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nApril 6:<\/strong> During a press conference, Trump comments on the supposed negotiations, telling reporters: \u201cWe have to have a deal that\u2019s acceptable to me, and part of that deal is going to be we want free traffic of oil and everything else.\u201d Trump floats potentially imposing a toll system on the Strait of Hormuz.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nApril 7:<\/strong> Trump threatens the total annihilation of Iran: \u201cA whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don\u2019t want that to happen, but it probably will. We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nApril 8: <\/strong>After widespread backlash to his threats to commit crimes against humanity, Trump writes on Truth Social that it was a \u201cbig day for World Peace\u201d and that Iran had finally \u201chad enough.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe United States of America will be helping with the traffic buildup in the Strait of Hormuz. There will be lots of positive action! Big money will be made. Iran can start the reconstruction process. We\u2019ll be loading up with supplies of all kinds, and just \u2018hangin\u2019 around\u201d in order to make sure that everything goes well,\u201d Trump adds.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut within hours, Trump was once again threatening to resume military operations if a \u201cREAL AGREEMENT\u201d wasn\u2019t reached.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nApril 16: <\/strong>\u201cThe war in Iran is going on swimmingly,\u201d Trump says during a speech in Las Vegas, suggesting the war will end soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nApril 16: <\/strong>Trump says he\u2019s not sure if the ceasefire with Iran needs to be extended, because the country \u201cwants to make a deal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nApril 17: \u201c<\/strong>Iran has agreed to never close the Strait of Hormuz again,\u201d Trump writes. \u201cIt will no longer be used as a weapon against the World!\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMay 1:<\/strong> Trump says of Iran: \u201cThey want to make a deal, but I don\u2019t \u2014 I\u2019m not satisfied with it, so we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMay 23: <\/strong>Trump writes on Truth Social that he has talked to all the leaders involved and \u201can Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization. \u2026 Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly. In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nJune 5: <\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s really not that much of a war, it\u2019s a military conflict \u2014 it\u2019s practice,\u201d Trump says at a farming event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nJune 7:\u00a0 <\/strong>The war crosses the 100-day mark. Trump touts, as he has been doing for weeks, that it is still short compared to other wars. \u201cWe were in Vietnam for 19 years and you\u2019re telling me about three months,\u201d Trump tells NBC News. \u201cAnd their leaders, their leaders are gone,\u201d he adds, referring to the U.S. killing Iran\u2019s leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nJune 8: <\/strong>\u201cThey were going back and forth [with strikes], and now they both agreed, through me, to stop, and now we\u2019re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal,\u201d Trump says in New York before attending the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden. It would bring an end to the war \u201cin two or three days,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\nJune 8:<\/strong> Iran shoots down a U.S. helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz. \u201cNevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,\u201d Trump writes a day later.<\/p>\n
