\n\tAlabama Senator Tommy Tuberville called for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to be arrested and sent to the infamous America torture prison at Guantanamo Bay. Mamdani\u2019s crime? Calling indicted alleged war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu an \u201carchitect of genocide,\u201d responsible for a series of atrocities in the ongoing war on Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSooner or later,\u201d Mamdani will \u201cdo something more stupid than what he\u2019s done, where we will finally say enough is enough, go put the handcuffs on him [\u2026] and send him to Gitmo,\u201d Tuberville, a Republican, said, calling Mamdani a \u201cthug.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a video published earlier this week, Mamdani announced that after a legal review, his administration had determined that the city did not have authority to execute an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the Israeli prime minister\u2019s arrest. Netanyahu is expected to attend the General Assembly meeting at the United Nations\u2019 New York City headquarters in September. Throughout his campaign, Mamdani had indicated that he would seek to execute on the ICC\u2019s arrest warrant should Netanhayu visit the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cThe federal government, however, does, and I call on them to join the [International Criminal Court] and execute this warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI want to be equally clear, Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe video immediately triggered outrage from conservatives and the pro-Israel wing of Congress. Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) called Mamdani, who is Muslim, an \u201capologist for terrorists,\u201d which \u201cmakes [him] a terrorist.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFine further called for Mamdani to be denaturalized and deported in retaliation for his comments. Over the course of Mamdani\u2019s campaign and early administration, threats to denaturalize and deport the mayor \u2014 who was born in Uganda and naturalized as an American citizen in 2012 \u2014 have become a staple of the right\u2019s attacks against him. In July of last year, Trump himself threatened to strip Mamdani of his citizenship after he said he would not cooperate with federal efforts to surge immigration arrests and deportations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tRep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) told Piers Morgan that Jews who had voted for Mamdani were \u201cself loathing,\u201d and suggested that the mayor was complicit with the \u201cmurder\u201d and \u201crape\u201d of American women and girls by \u201cillegal aliens.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), whose dispute with the Democratic Party over his carte blanche support for Israel has sent him into the all too eager arms of Fox News producers, told the network that Mamdani was angry at Netanyahu because the Israeli prime minister \u201ckilled a lot of people\u201d he \u201cadmired,\u201d suggesting the mayor supported terrorist networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tPresident Donald Trump responded to Mamdani on Truth Social, writing that \u201cBenjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America.\u201d Notably, the president did not directly cite his ongoing support for Israeli control of Gaza as the primary reason Netanyahu would be protected by his administration. \u201cHe is fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran,\u201d Trump wrote, referencing Israeli assistance in his ongoing war of choice with Iran. \u201cThe only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, something that should have been dealt with years ago.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe United States is not officially a party to the ICC, and it\u2019s essentially a given that the Trump administration will not move to arrest Netanyahu to bring him before the court. But what is undeniable is that a growing majority of Americans now view Netanyahu and Israel\u2019s actions against Palestinians as an unconscionable crime against humanity.<\/p>\n
